Roof-top terrace garden approved for town pub

The Broken Bridge pub in Pontefract, owned by JD Wetherspoon, has been given planning permission to create the garden at its Horsefair building.

The plans had previously included converting part of the building into a hotel, but this idea has since been scrapped.

The plans for the garden has also been altered, moving the area to to an unused section on the first floor and the partial removal of the roof.

They company plans to create a covered section of beer garden, and area with a retractable canopy and an uncovered area.

The plan shows seat for around 120 people in total across the three areas.

New toilets would also be included.

However, the plans had attracted letters of objection from 10 people.

One wrote: " The noise from the broken bridge is already unbearable without having more noise added by way of a rooftop garden the noise echoes so it will only be 10 times worse."

Pontefract Civic Society had said it was in favour of the hotel, but was unhappy with the beer garden plans.

They wrote: "We are in objection of the proposed rooftop beer garden due to the potential noise pollution and inconvenience this would potentially cause to residents that live adjacent to the property."
