He said: “I was very worried about Queens and Ryan. I was worried that was it was Ryan’s neighbourhood, in a small apartment like everyone in New York. “He was traumatised by it.”

Ryan said it made him appreciate being able to travel, see people and come home.

He said: “Before I always knew I could see family and work and you take it for granted.

“New York compared to Wakefield was so dense. It never eased up there, so coming here feels like vacation, a vacation away from the existential dread pervasive in my neighbourhood.

“There was a point at the height of lockdown where you felt like you would never take travelling for granted again but it felt so far away. It’s nice to be here now.”
