The shop, in Treacy Hall, shares space with the Cathedral Kitchen, but a lack of space means it will be unable to reopen following the lifting of restrictions.

One job will be lost as a result of the closure.

A spokesperson for the Cathedral said: "The Covid-19 pandemic has brought huge challenges for the Cathedral, as it has for many organisations.

"Sadly, when we re-open the Treacy Hall in September there will be insufficient room for both the Cathedral Kitchen and the Cathedral Shop to operate in accordance with Public Health recommendations and Government requirements.

"The Cathedral Kitchen will continue to serve the communities of our city and beyond.

"The Cathedral Shop has played an important role in the life and mission of our Cathedral in recent years, and I would like to express my gratitude to the staff and volunteers who have made it such a consistently welcoming place for so many.

"We are committed to ensuring that Wakefield Cathedral is a place of prayer and hospitality for all."
