Wakefield Mumbler launches city-wide pumpkin trail to help children celebrate Halloween

A fun pumpkin trail will help families in Wakefield to celebrate Halloween.

The trail – similar to the rainbow one during lockdown – invites children to draw their own pictures of pumpkins before sticking them in their windows for other youngsters to see.

Families can then see how many they can spot throughout October, as an alternative to trick or treating.

Mum Vicki Smith, who runs parenting website Wakefield Mumbler, launched the trail to help children who might not be able to enjoy their usual Halloween night activities this year.

She said: “We love Halloween, especially trick or treating, and will be disappointed if we can’t go out on the night.

“But this year, people might not want children knocking at their doors, and parents might not want their little ones rummaging through communal bowls of sweets either.

“The rainbow trails were brilliant over lockdown and we had great fun spotting them all on our daily walks. The pumpkin trail is a similar idea and gives everyone something fun to take part in. They could do it in fancy dress if they wanted to, and parents could even put a small treat in their child’s Trick or Treat bag for each pumpkin they spot.”

Families can download a pumpkin template on the Wakefield Mumbler website, design their own, or perhaps paint a funny face onto a real pumpkin and put it in the garden.

Vicki added: “Halloween will certainly be different this year, but you can still have lots of fun. There are lots of pumpkin picking events and Halloween classes if you want to get out somewhere too. I can’t wait to see all the different pumpkin designs children come up with.”
