Jonathan Barratt, who is part of the delivery team for Walton, has so far worn four different costumes on his route, and says he has plans to unveil more in the coming weeks.

He said: "I saw a postman do it in South Shields and I asked my big boss 'would you mind if I did it to cheer a few people up?'

"So I sent off for a penguin on first to see what people's reactions were and they loved it.

"It's brilliant. One woman left me a lovely note on her door, she said it was really cheering her up.

"She sent her pictures to a paramedic she knows and she made me a little teddy dressed in a postman uniform.

"Because of the times we're in at the moment and everybody stuck in the house, for some people I might be the only face they see some days."

Jonathan, who lives in Crofton, wears each costume for as long as it takes him to complete his route, sometimes in excess of six hours.

His costumes have so far included a penguin, an Oompa Loompa and even the '118 Man' from the popular series of TV adverts.

Over the Easter weekend, he wore a chicken costume and treated local families to a special delivery of chocolate eggs.

He has caused a stir on social media, where many residents have turned to share photos and videos of their local postie.

Jonathan said: "Ninety-nine per cent of people have loved it. With the kids and the chicken and the eggs they loved it.

"If I had an outfit to wear every day I would wear one every day because it doesn't right cheer people up."
