PICTURES: Club records fall to Wakefield Harriers in superb home meet

Young Athletes from hosts Wakefield Harriers registered two club records at the John Newsome Memorial Open Meeting at Thornes Park, last Sunday.

Aran Thomas threw a new U17s men’s club discus record of 46.57m, beating his previous best set last year.

Harriers also celebrated some excellent Grade 2 performances from Lucy Holmes, who won the senior women’s shot with 11.46m, Amy Hunt, who leapt to first place in the U15s girls pole vault with 2.90m and Alfie Edwards, who topped the list in the U15s boys long jump with 5.67m.

There were more Grade 3 results from Luke Thackray, on his way to first spot in the senior men’s javelin with 50.45m, Emily Plimmer, who raced to victory in the U15s girls 800m with 2:23.30s, Alfie Edwards’ winning leap of 3.00m in the U15s boys pole vault and Amy Hunt, who claimed second in the U15s girls long jump with 4.72m.

The meet was also the first competition for many of Harriers’ Junior Jets starlets.

Following up on her club record in the 600m, Courtney Newsome also took second in the 75m in a fast time of 11.15s.

Other outstanding performers in the U11s age group were Tilly Simms (second, shot - 5.15m), Alice Roe (first, pole vault - 1.20m), Theo Dudding (first, 600m - 2:01.21), Cole McAndrew (first, long jump - 3.31m) and James Sharp (first, shot - 6.58m).

Harriers’ senior women’s A team of IOndia Elliott, Lucy Robinson, Jenny Buck and Charlene Thomas won the team prize at the Yorkshire Road Relay Championships.

Thomas, TRobinson and Buck recorded the three fastets times of the day as the Harriers finished a full two minutes clear of the field.

The B team of Julie Greenwood, Helen Beck, Nicky Steel and Eileen Mannion finished a good eighth.

The senior men’s A team of Mark Bostock, Daniel Franks, Ross Penny and Chris Ward also finished eighth while the B team of Benjamin Khan, Craig Davidson, Dave Brooke were 20th.

Harriers didn’t have a complete team in the U17s men’s event but Matthew Hill made an impression by winning the first leg and he was fastest overall.

In the road races for younger athletes, Emily Plimmer was an excellent second in the U15s girls race and, with Suzanne Brooke seventh and Harriet Metcalfe in 12th, the team won silver medals. There were good runs from B team runners Lydia Barker (13th), Lauren Rayner (18th) and Millie Hinchcliffe (19th). Bailey Mann and Callum Gaunt were 16th and 21st in the U15s boys race.
