Young pupils from 10 Wakefield schools put their determination, skills and stamina to the test in a marathon sports day.

Around 600 children from schools in the Waterton Academy Trust came together for a celebration of sport at Sharlston Community School.

Organiser Steve Biltcliffe, from Wakefield School Sports Network, said: “There was a great sense of teamwork with everybody from teachers, CEOs, support staff, sports coaches, sports leaders, and Year 5 and 6 pupils from Sharlston coming together to create an amazing day.

“There was a real community to feel to the day and everyone – pupils, staff, parents – left with a smile on their faces.”

Dave Dickinson, chief executive of Waterton Academy Trust, said: “Days like this show the wonderful benefits of working in close collaboration with such a cracking group of schools.

“In particular I am so proud of the focus and commitment of our pupils and we have some outstanding sporting teams.

“Social and emotional development for kids is important to prepare for the next phases of life, like a career, family and relationships.

“While academic education is crucial for personal growth, playing sports is almost equally as important for social and emotional health.”
