Big crowds turned out in glorious weather to see the parade through the village on Saturday.

Colourful floats and people wearing fancy dress costumes marched from Highfield School to the maypole green.

The May Queen Izzy Wainwright and her maids of honour were among the stars of the show.

The event, organised by Gawthorpe Maypole Committee, will also include a fun fair, music and maypole dancing.

Committee member Duncan Smith said: “It was absolutely fantastic. I don’t think I have seen as many people out for years.

“The weather helped massively. We had a really good entry into the procession and the quality was really high so the judges had a hard task.

“Everybody had a really fun community day.”

As well as Saturday’s celebrations the committee also held a tea party in the village for 100 elderly people on Monday.

Mr Smith said: “It was great. It helps them to be involved in the celebrations.”
