Over the past few weeks many Wakefield Hospice supporters have been following the plight of the ‘escaped turkey’ on its Facebook page.

It had been the charity’s intention to ‘catch the turkey’ ahead of its Festive Fun Run on Sunday, December 11.

But the plucky turkey has captured the hearts of hospice supporters. And in the true spirit of Christmas they are going to welcome him with open arms to join in the fun at 10am.

Event organiser Fiona Day said: “It turns out that Wakefield is a city of turkey lovers. While we are receiving lots of entries into the Fun Run, only a handful of people wanted to catch the turkey. After such an impressive run from Blacker Hall Farm to Pugneys, via our hospice warehouse, Sandal Castle and other local locations we have decided that the turkey deserves to come along and take part in the event. In fact we’re going to ask him to lead our participants across the start line.”

As an added incentive to take part, everyone who registers for the Festive Fun Run will also be entered into a free prize draw to win their Christmas dinner, courtesy of Blacker Hall Farm. The local business has kindly donated a turkey royale hamper, worth more than £100 which includes a turkey, gammon joint, beef joint, pigs in blankets and much more.

Before the run starts Christmas music will be supplied by Styletrax Disco and requests are welcome. Hospice volunteers will be running a hot chocolate and cakes stall as well as a children’s tombola. All the proceeds from the event will go to supporting the patients and families of Wakefield Hospice. The event has been kindly sponsored by Xplore and Laser Zone.
