Police chase man suspected of having large knife in Castleford town centre

Police were called after a man was allegedly spotted carrying a large knife around Castleford town centre last night (Wednesday).

Officers from the Normanton and Featherstone neighbourhood police team (NPT), along with an assisted response team and the taser unit, tracked the man using CCTV footage and gave chase on foot. He was stopped and searched on Albion Street but had no weapon on him.

A knife was later found under a car on nearby Provident Street. The 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He is still in custody.

Inspector John Rogerson said: “Officers were called to Castleford town centre at 10.05pm on Wednesday, April 8, following a reported sighting of a man with a knife. A man was stopped and searched in Albion Street but no weapon was found on him. A knife was found by officers a short time later under a vehicle in Provident Street. The 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and remains in custody at this time.”
