Police close Wakefield road after power cable collapse leaves 500 homes without power

Police in Wakefield have closed a busy road after a power cable fell down, leaving 500 homes without power.

Police are on the scene of the incident on the A642, close to the National Coal Mining Museum, where a power cable has fallen to the ground.

The road remains closed, and workmen are on scene.

It is understood the incident is connected to a power outage affecting an estimated 500 homes in Middlestown, Thornhill and Overton.

Norther Powergrid said they were aware of a power cut caused by an "unexpected problem with the cables or equipment" in the area.

The power cut was first reported at around 11.42am, and it is estimated that power will be restored by 4pm.

Homes in the WF12 and WF4 postcode areas are affected.
