Police have confirmed they are investigating the death of the woman at Pinderfields Hospital in the early hours of this morning.
The tragedy happened at around 12.30am when a 60-year-old fell from the top floor of the main building.
She had been admitted into hospital yesterday.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called at around 1.15am this morning to reports of a 60-year-old woman having fallen from a balcony at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
“Officers are not treating the incident as suspicious and are working with the coroner as part of their enquiries.”
David Melia, director of nursing at Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust had earlier said: “Accident and emergency crews attended, but sadly she died a short time later. She received all the care that she could.
“Her next of kin have been informed.
“It’s very very sad. We are supporting our own staff who witnessed the incident and who are obviously very distressed.
“We are now conducting our own internal investigation.”
