Saul Homes was given planning permission to build 24 family homes in southern Hemsworth in 2017.

But the company has been forced to halt work at the site, located off Meadow Croft, by Wakefield Council for 28 days.

A council document said "unauthorised" development had taken place at the site.

Back in February, Barnsley-based Saul Homes asked for 14 of the 22 conditions imposed on the development in 2017 to be lifted.

Most of these related to fine technical details linked to the construction work.

But the council was yet to agree to that request.

In a statement, Tom Stannard, the local authority's corporate director for regeneration, said: "The council is investigating a complaint about a breach of planning control - a temporary stop notice has been issued while the Council considers the matter."

Saul Homes was contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
