But the plans have sparked concern among local residents, with many people citing concerns about congestion in the area and insufficient infrastructure.

One objector wrote: "I am utterly dismayed at the prospect of yet another proposed house building development in the Newton Hill area. My family enjoy walking the green fields and never has this facility been so important as highlighted in the current Covid 19 situation.

"To enable local residents to take designated exercise with the current population this was a much needed outdoor outlet and proved to be a extra busy area. The area is very well used regularly for recreation and dog walkers.

"I would seriously question if Leeds Road (A61) can cope with more residents emerging in vehicles. Much of Leeds Road is used for residential parking and will be a serious hazard having another road.

"Additional traffic from 91 homes will be very significant."

Many objectors also raised concerns about a lack of new schools and doctors in the Outwood area.

One wrote: "There has been so many new build houses in the Outwood area recently but no additional schools or doctors or dentists.

"School applications are already well over the numbers the local schools are able to support. This area does not need any more new housing estates."

According to plans unveiled this week, Leeds Road could be in line for a major revamp, with priority given to cyclists and buses. But, if approved, the scheme will not be completed until 2023.

The area of land had previously been allocated for housebuilding under Wakefield Council's Local Plan, which sets out plans for the district until 2026.

A spokesperson from Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire commented: “We are working closely with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and other key stakeholders to develop the planning application in question which is for 91 dwellings and includes vehicular access taken from Leeds Road.

"In-line with the planning process, we will take feedback received into consideration for future scheme overviews in order to deliver a proportion of the housing requirements outlined in WMDC’s local plan."
