Wakefield Council has said it no longer publishes its own newspaper in print, after the authority's Liberal Democrat member called for it to be axed to save cash.

'The Citizen' was produced every six months and distributed freely to households across the district.

But since last year it has been running exclusively online.

The idea came as part of his proposed amendment to the council's Budget, which will be debated on Wednesday.

But the Labour-run council's deputy leader has said that The Citizen has already been printed for the last time.

Councillor Jack Hemingway said: "Last year, I confirmed that The Citizen newspaper would stop after the March 2020 edition.

"This was included in my budget speech, as part of the debate at full council on February 26, 2020.

"For just under a year now the council’s news has been posted on the digital Citizen website, which is a more cost effective and environmentally friendly way to keep people informed."
