Andy Hall served carvery dinners to rescuers from across the country from The Cobbler pub on Knottingley Road.

The rescue workers were using nearby Pontefract Fire Station as a base as they helped hundreds of people devastated by the floods in York and Leeds.

Mr Hall said: "We served up carvery dinners, drinks and refreshments to 56 rescue workers when they were coming off their shift after helping communities in Leeds and York on Boxing Day.

"It was quite overwhelming to see all those people putting themselves out there to help those in need and it was great to give something back to them."

Among those tucking in were members of the Severn Area Rescue Association.

The organisation, whose crews were deployed to areas of Northern England to help with the rescue and clean up efforts, said on Facebook: "Thank you to the Cobbler Pontefract for looking after and feeding our teams who are in Pontefract helping those affected by the flooding. ‪#‎Volunteers‬ ‪#‎Lifeboat‬‪#‎MountainRescue‬ ‪#‎Floods‬"
