The council has released a list of more than 60 milesof roads and footpaths where repairs and resurfacing will be carried out this year.

Highways bosses have already warned that there is not enough funding to repair all the district’s roads because of spending cuts by the government.

David Dagger, the council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “We know that some people may be disappointed if the programme does not include a road that they believe needs attention.

“But we have to look at the district-wide picture, which covers around 5000 streets, which is about 1,500km (932 miles).”

Last October the Express revealed that more than 11,500 reports or complaints about potholes had been received by the council since 2009-10.

But in the same period, government funding to repair the roads had been slashed, leading to a headache for highways bosses who must decide which roads to fix.

Coun Dagger said: “Although we do not have the massive funds needed to deal with every road issue, this year’s investment will enable us to focus our work on safety and prolonging the life of the roads as much as possible.”

Wakefield Council is facing budget cuts of £38m in the current financial year. Around a third of the local authority’s budget will have been cut by 2020.

Coun Dagger said: “To do this within budget means we have to prioritise what we do and ensure the maintenance method we use gives the best value for money.”

The council said its maintenance programme was designed to make sure roads were safe. Highways which were not included in this year’s programme would be monitored to ensure unsafe defects would be repaired as soon as possible.

Coun Dagger said: “Our engineers thoroughly assess and evaluate all highway issues so we can focus our work and limited budget on the roads which are most in need.”

The Department for Transport has been criticised for cutting road maintenance budgets for councils by £1.2bn since 2010.

But the government has claimed to have increased spending on roads by 27 per cent, and said £24bn would be spent on repairs up to 2021.

Government figures show it costs £52 to fill in a pothole, or £70 in London.
