Castleford Tigers may be top of the Super League, but a nearby pub is not far behind when it comes to pulling pints.
The Wheldon Hotel and Boot Room on Wheldon Road was recently shortlisted for being the best rugby league pub in the country by Facebook page, the Rugby League Fan Club.
It was one of four that made it through to the public-vote final, but was narrowly beaten by a pub in Bradford with the result revealed at the weekend.
For Boot Room owner Donna Taylor, who has owned the business for nine years, admits it came as a shock.
She said: “My husband saw it on Facebook and we were really surprised because we knew nothing about it.
“I was pleased though because it’s nice just to be recognised.”
Sitting opposite the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, it’s obvious why the venue is popular among Tigers fans, but there’s plenty of Castleford rugby memorabilia mounted on the walls.
With Tigers getting off to a flying start this season, she says expectations and business are both booming.
“It’s brilliant, the atmosphere on match day is absolutely fantastic,” she added.
“We’re lucky enough to have a large beer garden, and it’s a family-friendly sport so there’s very little trouble and we get both sets of fans in on match day.
“The better they play the more people come out to watch them, and everybody is buzzing at the moment and the team Daryl Powell has put together.”
