A bright green, blue-headed Port Lincoln parrot has been spotted on numerous occasions over the past two weeks at Pugneys, off Denby Dale Road.

Keen birder Mick Hemingway, 51, of Wakefield, posted a photograph he took of the parrot on Twitter.

Mr Hemingway, who works as a human resources manager at Wakefield Council, said: “It has been out in the wild for a few weeks now. People put out fat balls and things like that for the wild birds, which may be helping keep it going.

“It must have escaped from somewhere. Presumably it is someone’s pet or it may be from a collector’s aviary.”

Mr Hemingway said it is the first time he has spotted a parrot at Pugneys in 25 years’ birdwatching at the park.

Last month a rare Blyth’s Pipit was spotted near the Calder Wetlands site, which is across the road from Pugneys Country Park.
