Pupils' artwork for housing site

Cherry Tree Academy teamed up with Barratt Homes to produce an image of Pontefract Castle at Ashmeade Park.

The Year 5 and 6 classes at the primary school in Pontefract took part in the creative workshop at the end of last year, creating a large 2D image of Pontefract Castle, with references to the town’s liquorice heritage.

The artwork was then photographed and printed onto two aluminium composite boards, which now have pride of place at the entrance of Ashmeade Park.

The class recently visited the development to see their artwork.

Melanie Barber, deputy headteacher at Cherry Tree Academy, said: “The children were delighted to see their creative artwork come to life. The activity has been a great opportunity for them to learn about the rich heritage of their local area in an innovative way and now they have something they can visit and enjoy.

We had great fun working on this with Barratt Homes, and we’re pleased that the end piece looks as wonderful as it does.”

Jayne Owen, sales adviser at Ashmeade Park, who welcomed the children to Ashmede Park, said: “It was lovely to show the children their fantastic artwork. They seemed so pleased to see how it has come to life and is now a feature at the development. We are always very keen to work with the communities in which we build and ensure they play a part in our sites. While we are building new homes for the next generation, it is brilliant that this piece of history is now incorporated into Ashmeade Park, bringing the past and future together.”
