The campaign, led by Keep Britain Tidy, aims to clear up local communities in preparation for The Queen’s 90th birthday on April 21, which will be officially celebrated in June.

When she came to the throne, litter was not as big a problem as it is today and the project aims to encourage people to show pride in local communities.

Wakefield Wildcats, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers are backing the campaign.

And they will be launching the event in primary schools. Wildcats’ mascot Daddy Cool joined pupils at Sandal Magna Community Primary school to kickstart the clean up and explain how to get involved.

Wakefield Council is supporting the campaign from February 29 to March 6 with several clean up events. Residents, businesses and groups wanting to take part can register at www.cleanforthequeen.org
