Quiz your prospective parliamentary candidates

People can quiz prospective MPs at a number of hustings events across the area.

Prospective candidates for the Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford constituency will take part in a debate at St Giles’ Church, Pontefract, on Friday, April 24.

Labour’s Yvette Cooper, Tory candidate Beth Prescott, Liberal Democrat Edward McMillan-Scott and Nathan Garbutt, from the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP), will all be at the church from 5.30pm.

The event will be chaired by the Bishop of Wakefield Tony Robinson in the church’s cafe area from 5.30pm until 8pm.

The candidates will speak from 5.30pm before taking written questions from the audience from 6.30pm until 8pm.

Rev Bob Cooper, vicar of St Giles’ Church, said: “With a general election less than four weeks away, we hope this hustings event will give voters an opportunity to hear the views of their local candidates in an open and transparent way.

“We are pleased as the local church to be able to provide that neutral space to do just that.”

Voters in Wakefield can also meet their prospective parliamentary candidates at a hustings event on Wednesday, April 29.

Dean of Wakefield Jonathan Greener will chair the debate, which will start at 1pm.

The Candidates are still to confirm their attendance for the event.

Voters across the country will go to the polls on Thursday, May 7 for the general election.

People will also elect district councillors - a third of Wakefield Council members are up for election on the same day.
