Raising a glass of ale to St George at church festival
St Peter’s Church in Hobury hosted the event last Saturday alongside members of St John’s of Horbury Bridge.
The Mayor of Wakefield, Coun June Cliffe, officially opened proceedings before the Bishop of Wakefield Tony Robinson led devotions in honour of England’s patron saint at noon.

Hide AdThe Horbury Victoria Youth Band impressed with a medley of brass music and Ethiopian Orthodox guests from Huddersfield also played.
Punters also lapped up the event’s very own brew, St George’s Festival Ale.
Face painting took place in the vicarage gardens and youngsters enjoyed outdoor games.
And a buffet was laid out for out hungry visitors to get stuck into.

Hide AdSue Casey, who attended the event, said: “The weather was cold but fine and the festivities were held outside the church. “There was a wonderful spread afterwards, washed down with St George’s celebratory ale.
“The whole event was a joy to be a part of with a real sense of community.”
