Rescue efforts after man spotted in River Calder

Rescue efforts were underway last night (Tuesday) after a man was spotted in the River Calder.

A 55-year-old man was taken to hospital after police were called to Mill Street West, Dewsbury, at around 7pm.

Emergency service staff helped the man from the river bank after a 999 call had been made in concern for his safety.

The man’s medical condition is not yet known.

Police, ambulance and fire teams attended the incident.

In the wake of floods, the level of the River Calder in parts of Dewsbury reached 5.61 metres on Boxing Day, according to the Environment Agency – the previous record was 5.41 metres.
