Angry residents fighting plans for a £21m new housing estate in Knottingley have made a final plea to planning bosses to reject the application.
Developers Gleeson Homes submitted plans for 176 homes on land next to Rainsborough Avenue in July and Wakefield Council planning committee members are recommended to give full planning approval for the scheme at a meeting today (Thursday).
But residents claim there have been fatal road accidents at the proposed access to the site off Pontefract Road.
Resident Karen Richardson, 45, said: “The site of the access road is totally wrong.
“There have already been fatal road accidents at the junction near the proposed site, so more traffic will just make it worse. It’s a death waiting to happen.”
If approved, the Rainsborough Park development would consist of 41 two-bedroom, 108 three-bedroom and 27 four-bedroom properties.
Ms Richardson added: “We don’t want the houses in Knottingley. There are enough empty houses or homes for sale already.
“I think they will struggle to sell the houses and we don’t want to be left with a building site if no-one buys them.
Don Ferguson, 68, of Rainsborough Avenue, said: “The proposed site is on green belt land, but the developers haven’t had to prove there’s a need to build on that land.
“Some people might label me a ‘nimby’ but there is no need for any more housing in Knottingley.”
A spokesman for Gleeson Homes said: “We hope the committee will grant planning approval so this £21m project can start as soon as possible to produce much-needed new homes for the local community.
“This project will provide jobs for local people for the next eight years and will inject £7m into the local economy.
“If we are granted approval this week we will immediately start recruiting bricklayers, joiners and labourers locally and we would also like to hear from young people who would like an apprenticeship in house building.”
An outline planning application has also been submitted for up to a further 475 houses next to the site just off Pontefract Road.
The plans, also recommended for approval at today’s meeting, include land for a school and commercial use as well as houses.
