A £10,000 lottery grant has been awarded to a group of community-spirited schools to celebrate the Olympics.
The Brigshaw Co-operative Trust – which comprises student ambassadors from Brigshaw High School and Language College and primary schools in Allerton Bywater Great Preston, Kippax, Ledston and Swillington – was given the Big Lottery grant to organise a series of community events.
They will also use the cash to host their own Olympics and Paralympics from June 16 to 25 and celebrate the Olympic season with a gala at Brigshaw High School on June 23.
Simon Brass, assistant principal at the high school, said: “We are convinced this exciting project has the potential to bring together our whole community and really engage all our young people.
“The real power of it will be seen in the legacy it will create in terms of student leadership and community involvement. We are grateful to all our funders, partners and sponsors for their support.”
Twenty student ambassadors at Brigshaw have organised and led the majority of the programme together with younger ambassadors from the primary schools.
During the Olympiad youngsters from the trust, along with Methley Primary School, will take part in a range of activities across the curriculum aimed at exploring and celebrating Olympic values.
The whole community is invited to the gala event where there will be stalls, music, food and fun activities.
