SLIDESHOW: Archers aim high at Pontefract Castle

Bowmen and women from across the north of England flocked to Pontefract Castle to take part in an archery tournament.

The annual event, organised by Wakefield Archers, saw 60 competitors battle it out in the Pomfret 60 tournament.

Some competitors wore medieval costume for the longbow competition.

Wendy Fryer, group treasurer, said: “It went really well and is a big event in the world of archery.

“We get a lot of competitors who return year on year because it’s quite an iconic place to shoot arrows in the grounds of the castle.

“We had people come from Hull, Scarborough and across the northern area of the country to take part.”

Competitors took part in a longbow competition, a speed shoot and a target challenge.

Mrs Fryer added: “I’ve been a member of Wakefield Archers for 18 years and the Pomfret event was going long before I joined. It’s a great event to take part in and has become very well known.”
