SLIDESHOW - Flooding in Castleford caused havoc

A heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon saw the River Aire in Castleford burst its banks and flood Lock Lane.

The A656 was closed on Sunday, November 15 and Monday, November 16 as the flood water spread onto the road.

There was also flooding in Allerton Bywater and Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve was closed to visitors on Monday.

Acting Insp Lee Carlson, of Castleford neighbourhood police team, said the water did not flood any homes or businesses.

He said: “Although the flooding wasn’t as serious as it has been previously, the main problem we had was people ignoring the road closures.

“The council had put road closure signs out but a few people risked it thinking that it would be okay to drive through and then got stuck and we had to rescue them.

“The road closures are put in place for people’s safety and we would ask everyone to make sure they adhere to the restrictions in the future.”

Graham West, Wakefield Council’s service manager for the highways network said: “We were prepared for the rain last weekend with teams on standby to respond to any emergencies. There were around 12 flooded roads across the entire district, which all remained passable for drivers.

“The only road closure was Lock Lane in Castleford due to the high levels of the River Aire and we supported the Environment Agency and other partners to help them deal with this.”
