SLIDESHOW: Scarecrows with plenty of tales to tell at Darrington

Characters from horror stories, children’s books and the Bible lined the streets of Darrington this week as part of the village’s annual scarecrow festival.

Thirty families showed off their stuffed creations, all based on this year’s book theme.

Visitors picked up scarecrow trail maps from the village shop and after completing the route voted for their top three characters.

The Fletcher family won first prize with their The Book of Exodus creation.

In second place was the Morrell family with their No Room on the Broom display.

And the Rose family came third with their Cat in the Hat scarecrow.

Other characters on display included Dracula, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, King Arthur and The Gruffalo.

Gail Jenkins, who helped to organise the festival. said: “It was very close who was going to get the trophies this year.

“It was great to see families walking round and enjoying the trail, especially in the lovely weather.”

Next year’s festival will run from June 17 until June 26.

Gail also hopes to hold scarecrow making sessions with local children and get businesses involved in the event.
