South Kirkby playground made an eyesore after traffic sign ‘bonfire’

A children’s playground was turned into an ‘eyesore’ after firebugs torched plastic signs from nearby roadworks.

Firefighters were called to the recreation ground in South Kirkby at 3.20am today (Saturday).

Watch commander Al Senior, of South Elmsall Fire Station, said: “It made it an eyesore - part of it - because they were burning plastic road traffic signs from works on Barnsley Road.”

He said the play facility hadn’t been ruined but an area five meters square had been affected and would need to be cleaned up. There were also lots of alcohol containers strewn nearby.

Mr Senior added: “They shouldn’t be lighting fires in public areas. It does take resources away in case there is a more serious incident elsewhere.”
