Sugar in store for visitors to town's festival

Sugary treats of all shapes and sizes will be on offer when Pontefract hosts the annual Liquorice Festival this weekend.

Hundreds of visitors are expected to hit the town to celebrate the festival, which takes place on Sunday.

Families, children and sweet-lovers will be greeted in the town centre by liquorice-themed stilt walkers and sweet shop clowns.

There will be more than 80 market stalls for visitors to sample including food, drink and crafts. And unusual liquorice products from beer and pies to toffee and fudge will be on offer. The event is running for its 21st year to celebrate Pontefract’s historic association with the Middle Eastern plant. Liquorice became a favourite of sweet-lovers when the famous Pontefract cakes were first produced.
