A suit fit for a US president - Tailors claim Donald Trump among their clientele

Carl Stuart, on Dale Street, Ossett, was once asked to make a jacket for Donald Trump during a visit to Britain.

Mr Trump, who was chosen to become the next president of the USA this week, had been just a mere multi-millionaire back in 2008 when an order came through to cut him a jacket from Harris Tweed cloth.

Yorkshire businessman Brian Haggas, who owns Harris Tweed and has business links with Carl Stuart, had personally asked the company to produce the jacket from the durable, hand-woven cloth.

Stephen Spurr, shop manager, explained: “We were asked to make the jacket out of the cloth because he wanted to present it to Donald Trump when he came to Scotland to open one of his golf courses.

“The link is that Donald Trump’s mother is from the Outer Hebrides where Harris Tweed cloth is made.

“We received a fax from his New York tailors with his measurements, and it took about three weeks to make and deliver it to Brook Taverner tailors owned by Mr Haggas”.

For Carl Stuart, Mr Trump is just one of a number of famous people to have turned to the bespoke company in the past.

Others include actor Robert de Niro, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Elton John.

Mr Spurr added: “We’ve had a few famous customers in the past around the same period, but he’s just about the most powerful person we’ve made clothes for - well, he is now.

“I think that’s probably about the pinnacle now.”
