Super League is the dream for Featherstone Rovers

Work is currently being carried out to build a specially adapted gym at the Post Office Road ground.

It is being built under the club’s Strata Homes 30m Stand which was built by volunteers after being transported from the former McCain Stadium at Scarborough Football Club in 2011.

Now, the ground has been identified as part of Wakefield Council’s Leisure, Recreation and Open Space Local Plan.

The council want to make the stadium and the area around it into a ‘sports and community hub.’

Paul Taylor, commercial manager, said: “When you go around Featherstone people are always talking about Rovers and that’s something we want to build on.

“We’ve got season ticket holders from Wakefield, Pontefract, Ackworth and all over the district but we want more people from Featherstone coming down to the club, supporting the team and using our facilities.

“We are working really hard to put ourselves in the best possible position to get into the Super League - that is the dream we have.”

As part of the council’s proposals, playing fields behind the stadium could be improved and a new access off Post Office Road to Featherstone Miners’ Welfare Club and Featherstone Cricket Club could also be built.

The facilities at the cricket and miners’ welfare club could also be improved.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The club are really trying to work more with the community because they know how important it is to people.”
