Swim team gets £6k boost for Pontefract hospice

A fundraising challenge for the Prince of Wales Hospice has got off to a swimming start, thanks to a Leeds health organisation.

Steven Brondel, a watch commander at Pontefract fire station, and Carl Baxter will take part in the Mighty Swim in memory of hospice patient Debbie Bennett, who recently lost her battle with cancer.
The pair wanted to raise £6,000 - the total of a day’s running costs - by swimming more than 30 miles across four of the largest lakes in the Lake District in just four days in September. But Simplyhealth has already matched the £6,000 target after being approached by the swimmers’ friend, and Mrs Bennett’s brother-in-law, Nick Giltrow, who works at the firm. The money donated by Simplyhealth was used to provide care at the hospice in celebration of what would have been Mrs Bennett’s 52nd birthday.

Raman Sankaran, from Simplyhealth, said: “We hope this donation will help many people in our community.” Visit www.justgiving.com/Steven-Brondel1 to sponsor the team.
