The two friends had been returning from the Tyne and Wear derby in Newcastle, when three men, all wearing Guinness St Patrick’s Day hats, approached them.

One of the men began verbally abusing one of the victims, then, without any provocation, he launched a tirade of punches at his head.

When his friend tried to intervene and pull off the attacker, he was also punched to the ground.

The suspect then left in a taxi to Bingley.

Detective Sergeant Tom Eastwood said: “Both the victims were left with cuts and bruises to their faces and grazed arms and elbows.

“This was completely unprovoked and violent behaviour displayed by the man towards two young men who were simply returning home from a day out watching football. It’s vital we trace the person responsible, if you recognise the man pictured, please contact us. “
