Brave mum Maya McCormack is inviting people to challenge her with daredevil new ways of raising funds.
The Challenge Maya initiative has been launched to support the Laila Milly Foundation, which Mrs McCormack set up with her husband Steve after their daughter was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Aicardi Syndrome. Little Laila died the day before her first birthday but the couple continued with their plans and raised £165,000 to fund a day nursery for children with serious and complex life threatening or shortening illnesses.
They opened the nursery - at the back of McCormack’s Opticians on Kirkby Road, Hemsworth - in August last year but the foundation still needs vital funds to pay for the day-to-day running of the facility.
Mrs McCormack, who is mum to Reuben, now one, said: “I’m not sure what I’m letting myself in for but this is my new challenge for 2015.
“People can post challenges on the Facebook page and then people will take a vote and the most popular ones will be taken on. The ones that get picked must raise a minimum of £50 before it is completed. However, I won’t be doing anything that breaks the law, puts my life at risk or causes life-long mental scarring to me or others.”
Staff at the nursery are currently working on improving the garden area and are looking for anybody who can donate paint, plants or pots as well as a few spare hours, to get in touch.
Mrs McCormack said: “We’d like to thank every person who has supported our charity. 2014 was an incredible year with opening our day respite centre. We made a promise to our beautiful daughter that we would honour her memory. Thank-you to everyone who helped us do this.”
