A Pontefract minister has been installed as president of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches.

Rev Bill Darlison was installed in the post in a ceremony at Nottingham University and will hold the title for a year.

Rev Darlison was born and still lives in Pontefract, and had initially studied for the priesthood in Rome, leaving before ordination, and working as a teacher.

He joined the Unitarian church in 1988, joining the congregation at Westgate Chapel, Wakefield, where he became a student pastor and studied for the Unitarian ministry, becoming a minister in 1994, and in 1996 he went to Dublin as full-time minister, returning to Pontefract on his retirement in 2010.

He said his intention was to build bridges between Unitarians and other faith groups during his term in office. He is pictured with his predecessor Lis Dyson-Jones.
