Town cadets flying high

Pontefract Air Cadets are flying high after scooping a range of awards already this year.

Three cadets have gained their bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards, three have notched up first aid qualifications and a cadet team has won a regional cross country competition.

The group, which meets at Minden House TA Centre, on Wakefield Road, is made up of youngsters aged between 13 and 20.

Sqn Ldr Steph Ford, squadron commander, said “It is great to see our cadets at Pontefract gaining skills and qualifications.

“These will not only help them throughout their lives, they are are also ones they enjoy completing.”

The group’s first success was at the area cross country competition last Sunday, where the girls’ senior team, Sgt Lois Whitaker, Cpl Freya Kaye and Cdts Tamara Carder and Amy Ingle, triumphed against other squadrons in the South and West Yorkshire Wing.

Sgt Lois Whitaker, Flt Sgt Ben Field and Cdt Thomas Dexter all passed their first aid course and three other cadets have also qualified for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The squadron is holding a recruitment night on Tuesday February 4 at 7.15pm, which is open to anyone aged 13 to 16.

The squadron parades every Tuesday and Friday evening from 7pm to 9pm.
