A town junior school could soon be the latest to convert to an academy.

The future of All Saints’ CE Junior and Infant School in North Featherstone is due for discussion by Wakefield Council’s cabinet next Tuesday.

The North Close school has applied to become part of the Enhance Academy Trust - a multi-academy trust (MAT).

If given the green light, the school will be publicly funded and accountable to the Secretary of State Funding, rather than the local authority.

A statement from the school in support of the plans read: “It is very unlikely that the school would be allowed to become an academy in our own right as this is not the general direction that the Department for Education are following.

“The school could remain as we are but as the number of schools in MATs increases and support from other sources becomes more difficult to find, individual schools are at risk of being isolated or being required to join MATs.”

The school was given a ‘good’ rating during its last Ofsted inspection in June.
