Town transformed by nursery rhyme characters

They came in all shapes and sizes, and were outstanding in their field.

Some were propped up outside of shops, while other simply stood proudly in the street.

A record number of people attended the nursery rhymes themed Ossett Scarecrow Festival on Saturday, September 26.

And more than 1,200 people walked the streets and voted for their favourite scarecrows.

An impressive Little Miss Moffat, created by Team Frozen, was crowned the winner of the individuals category.

Dimplewell Infants and Nursery School won the schools category for their Owl and the Pussycat.

A Baa Baa Black Sheep scene, created by the 3rd Ossett Rainbows, scooped the group under 16 award.

The commercial category was won by the Kidzaware charity for their Three Blind Mice scarecrow.

And the Ossett Triangle Tenants was crowned the winner of the group over 16 category for their Owl and the Pussycat scene.

The festival, organised by community group Building Ossett Better (BOB), ran alongside the monthly Yorkshire Food and Craft Market.

Organiser John Whiteman said: “It was fantastic and we had more people turn up than we have had in years.

“We had 47 scarecrows around the town and everyone came up with some fantastic entries.

“We have built on what we have done in previous years and it created an exciting day for everyone.”

BOB will be hosting a carved pumpkin competition on Saturday, October 31, which will run alongside the next Yorkshire Food and Craft Market.

Contestants should bring their pumpkins to the market at 10am and people will then vote for their favourite designs.

There will also be a Halloween fancy dress competition.
