Train hit concrete blocks on tracks in ‘reckless act’

Police are appealing for witnesses after a train hit blocks of concrete which were purposely placed on rail tracks near Featherstone.

British Transport Police (BTP) said a freight train travelling between Wakefield and Knottingley on Friday, December 27 collided with some concrete troughing lids that had been placed on the line near Common Side Lane, in Streethouse.

PC John Moss, leading the investigation, said: “This was a reckless and extremely stupid act by whoever placed these items on the line. I would appeal to anyone who may have any information which may be able to assist us in finding the person responsible to contact us.

“At 7.41pm, we received a call that the 6.33pm Wakefield to Knottingley freight service had hit some concrete troughing lids that had been placed on the line near Common Side Lane.

“We believe the troughing lids were deliberately placed on the tracks, but for what reason, we are unsure.”

No-one was injured in the incident and the train remained on the tracks throughout.
