West Yorkshire Police were called shortly before midday to reports that a car had collided with a traffic light on Denby Dale Road, Wakefield.

The car came to a rest on the central reservation.

It is believed that the driver of the car, a 77-year-old man, became unwell while driving.

He has been taken to Pinderfields Hospital for further treatment.

Local residents said they had seen police, fire crews and paramedics on the scene, close to Hampsons Plant World.

Denby Dale Road was closed for a short time in both directions between Pugneys and the Red Kite pub, and heavy traffic was reported on nearby Asdal Road and Durkar Low Lane.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 1148hrs Friday 12 February 2021, we received a report from the ambulance service of single car which had collided with a traffic light and come to rest in the central reservation on Denby Dale Road near Hampsons Plant World.

"Police and ambulance service attended.

"A 77-year-old male driver was taken to Pinderfields Hospital. Initial indication is that the driver became unwell whilst driving.

"The road was closed for a short time at Pugneys roundabout."
