The firm, which runs services across the region, announced yesterday that it would be implementing new capacity measures to help maintain social distancing.

And it later confirmed that for a standard single-decker bus, which usually hold up to 44 people, only 11 people will be able to travel at any on time.

On double-decker buses, where the capacity is normally 74, just 20 passengers will be permitted to board.

All Arriva buses will have seats within two metres of the driver taped off and a no-standing policy in place.

When capacities are met, buses will show a ‘bus full’ sign and will only stop to let passengers alight. When the sign is lit, the bus will only stop when people want to get off.

Passengers should also sit next to windows leaving a space in front, behind and next to them, those travelling with someone from their household should sit next to each other, while face masks should also be worn in enclosed spaces.

The announcement comes as lockdown measures look set to be eased next month with the hope that shops and businesses will slowly begin to re-open.

Patrick Sibley for Arriva Yorkshire said: “The safety of our passengers and colleagues is of the utmost importance to us and in addition to these new measures, we continue to operate in line with previous government advice to ensure bus travel is as safe as possible for those needing to make essential journeys.

"We appreciate some people may be concerned by the new capacity levels and would like to assure you that we want everyone’s journey to be as smooth and as safe as possible.

"We will be closely monitoring and adapting services in line with demand, wherever we can, to help ensure this is the case."
