A section of New Road, at the roundabout leading to Common Side Lane, has been closed where the collapse occurred.

And Yorkshire Water said it would take another three weeks to complete the repairs.

Jodie Coles, project manager for Yorkshire Water, said: “We’d like to apologise to anyone affected by this closure.

“Due to the location of the collapse and the fact the sewer is so deep beneath the road, the only safe thing to do was to close this section of road and divert traffic along a short diversionary route.

“We will be pulling out all the stops to get this repair carried out as quickly as possible and the road open again. Until then, we thank local residents and road users for their patience and support.”

Yorkshire Water said its contractors BarhaleWSP would not need access to any properties.

People should ask for identification, which can be checked by calling 0845 1 24 24 24, before letting anyone into their home.
