Firefighters could strike over pensions

Firefighters could take strike action in a row over pensions.

A total of 78 per cent of Fire Brigade Union (FBU) members voted in favour of industrial action.

The FBU said that proposed changes to the pension system were unaffordable and unworkable, and would result in an increased contribution from firefighters.

The union also said that the proposals would make it more likely that firefighters could be dismissed without a proper pension it they couldn’t meet fitness standards until the retirement age of 60.

The ballot took place yesterday and the union has 28 days to announce any industrial action.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said measures were in place should a strike go ahead.

The service is also recruiting volunteers should they be needed.
