Lorry catches fire on the M1

Firefighters were called to a lorry fire on the M1 this afternoon (Friday).

The incident happened southbound at junction 40 and was caused by hundreds of car batteries catching fire in the back of the HGV.

The driver realised his vehicle was on fire and pulled off the motorway onto a slip road and called 999.

Firefighters from Ossett and Wakefield attended at 1.43pm. Two firefighters waering breathing apparatus and hose reels extinguished the fire.

Nobody was injured.

Firefighters praised the quick-thinking of the driver, which prevented the incident from becoming more serious.
