Neil Fox Way, which was built as city centre bypass four years ago, has prompted hundreds of public payouts to people nearby, to compensate for the impact the road's had on their property prices.

Wakefield Council has now confirmed a sixth round of claims have recently been settled, to an overall value of nearly £185,000.

The total compensation bill for the road passed the £3m mark at the end of last year, with more than 700 households now having received a payout. Fees to agents and solicitors are also included in that figure.

People living in the Eastmoor, Stanley, Stanley Ferry and Pinders Heath areas are among those to have benefited from the compensation, which the council was legally required to set up.

When the scheme was first revealed last summer, the authority explained the law requires them to compensate landowners and tenants, "If the value of their land falls due to factors caused by work to highways such as noise, vibration, smell, fumes, smoke and artificial lighting".

The council said that a further 110 claims remain unsettled.
