No major incidents during firefighters’ strike

There were a total of 15 incidents throughout the strike. There were eight in Bradford, six incidents in Leeds, one in Kirklees, but none in Calderdale or Wakefield.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union walked out between 6pm and 10pm in protest against government changes to their pensions.

They are opposed to the plans which include raising the retirement age from 55 to 60.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton said: “We started off with a relatively quiet evening although we had a late flurry of calls in the last hour of strike action with almost half of our calls coming within that time.

“Luckily, we have experienced quite a mild evening which means we were not battling against icy weather conditions on the roads which can cause a rise in incidents at this time of year.

“We would like to thank the public for looking after themselves, their relatives and neighbours this evening. We have not received any call-outs to Christmas related incidents which is a good indicator that our safety messages are getting through.”

The FBU will stage another strike tonight between 6pm and 10pm.
