Police issue speeding reminder after half of drivers found to be over the limit

Police in Wakefield have issued a stark warning about the dangers of speeding, after recording more than 100 vehicles travelling above the speed limit in 30 minutes.

PCSOs from Wakefield's City and North West Neighbourhood Policing Team spent 30 minutes recording the speed of passing vehicles on two major roads into the city.

On Leeds Road, officers recorded 68 of 231 vehicles as being over the 30mph limit, while 135 of 244 drivers on Aberford Road were breaking the limit.

Sharing their findings on Facebook, they refuted those who referred to speed checks as "non-essential work" by sharing a link to a list of virtual candles lit in memory of those who have died in road traffic collisions.

They wrote: "PCSO Danny & PCSO Laura spent 30 minutes on the same section of Aberford Road and Leeds Road this evening with the Smiley SID and Pro Laser.

The force have previously been forced to issue speed warnings in the past, including a reminder of the speed limit on the Wakefield Eastern Relief Road.
