Northern Gas Networks said they had identified the main, which runs close to Doncaster Road, as a priority for urgent replacement, following a number of recent emergency repairs.

As part of the work, the metal pipework will be replaced with new, more durable plastic pipes.

A number of lane closures and traffic restrictions will also be in place on Doncaster Road and surrounding streets, including Neil Fox Way and Kirkthorpe Road, while the work is carried out.

Chris Reed, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these critical works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Wakefield.

“NGN is continuing to carry out its critical activities while following strict Government guidelines for safe distance working and observing health and safety guidance during the current coronavirus outbreak in England.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Temporary traffic lights have been in place on Doncaster Road, close to the junction with Oakenshaw Lane, for several weeks.

These two-way lights will stay in place until Monday, April 5, to allow work to be carried out between Oakenshaw Kennels and Oakenshaw Lane.

From Monday, March 8 until Monday, April 5, there will be no left or right turn from Doncaster Road onto Oakenshaw Lane.

Rolling temporary traffic lights are also in place on nearby Kirkthorpe Lane, and will remain in place until Monday, March 22. These lights will be monitored in person between 7am and 7pm.

From Monday, 22 March, part of Kirkthorpe Lane will be closed for four weeks. The closure will run from the junction of Kirkthorpe Lane with Black Road, approximately 200m up Kirkthorpe Road in the direction of Heath Common. There will be a signposted diversion in place.
